The Battle of the Falkland Islands was a naval action between the British Royal Navy and Imperial German Navy on 8 December 1914, during the First World War in the South Atlantic. The British, after a defeat at the Battle of Coronel on 1 November, sent a large force to track down and destroy the victorious German cruiser squadron. The battle is commemorated every year on 8 December in the Falkland Islands as a public holiday.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>HMS Invincible</b> - HMS Invincible was the lead ship of her class of three battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy during the first decade of the twentieth century and the first battlecruiser to be built by any country in the world. During the First World War she participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight in a minor role as she was the oldest and slowest of the British battlecruisers present. The ship engaged the German light cruiser Cöln, but did not hit her before Cöln was sunk by the battlecruiser Lion. During the Battle of the Falkland Islands, Invincible and her sister Inflexible sank the armoured cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau almost without loss to themselves, despite numerous hits by the German ships.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>HMS Kent</b> - HMS Kent was one of 10 Monmouth-class armoured cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the first decade of the 20th century. She was placed in reserve when completed in 1903, but was recommissioned for the China Station in 1906. She remained there until she returned home in 1913 for a lengthy refit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>HMS Glasgow</b> - HMS Glasgow, the sixth ship of that name, was a Town-class light cruiser built for the Royal Navy in the first decade of the 20th century.</div>

A set of 10 souvenir sheets were issued in pouch - Treasures of Philately, among which one sheet is on SS Normandie</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
SS Normandie was an ocean liner built in Saint-Nazaire, France, for the French Line Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT). She entered service in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat; she is still the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her novel design and lavish interiors led many to consider her the greatest of ocean liners. Despite this, she was not a commercial success and relied partly on government subsidy to operate. During service as the flagship of the CGT, she made 139 westbound transatlantic crossings from her home port of Le Havre to New York. Normandie held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing at several points during her service career, during which RMS Queen Mary was her main rival.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During World War II, Normandie was seized by US authorities at New York and renamed USS Lafayette. In 1942, the liner caught fire while being converted to a troopship, capsized onto her port side and came to rest on the mud of the Hudson River at Pier 88, the site of the current New York Passenger Ship Terminal. Although salvaged at great expense, restoration was deemed too costly and she was scrapped in October 1946.</div>

<b>Corpus Christi (Feast):</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ), also known as Corpus Domini, is a Latin Rite liturgical solemnity celebrating the tradition and belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ and his Real Presence in the Eucharist. It emphasizes the joy of the institution of the Eucharist, which was observed on Holy Thursday in the somber atmosphere of the nearness of Good Friday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the present Roman Missal, the feast is designated the solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is also celebrated in some Anglican, Lutheran, and Old Catholic Churches that hold similar beliefs regarding the Real Presence.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The feast is liturgically celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or, "where the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is not a holy day of obligation, it is assigned to the Sunday after the Most Holy Trinity as its proper day". At the end of Holy Mass, there is often a procession of the Blessed Sacrament, generally displayed in a monstrance. The procession is followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.<br /><br /><b><u>Corpus Christi Flotilla at Lake Hallstatt, Austria:</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hallstatt, in Austria is a small village that had so little space on land, the procession was moved, around 400 years ago, onto the lake on boats and salt ships; not least in order to get a view of the salt mountain, the old workplace of Hallstatt folk for thousands of years.<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The holiday begins with a High Mass in the Catholic church. Weather permitting, the procession continues to the colorfully decorated market square to then finally cast off from the shores on the festive <b>"Himmelsfuhre" boat</b>.<br /><br />Far beyond the borders of Austria, the Hallstatt lake procession is well known, and visitors from all corners of the Earth come to experience this special day in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut.<br /><br />Text Source: Wikipedia, im-salzkammergut.at</div>

This coin is recent addition to my collection, bought at the SIPA Exhibition, Chennai on July 25 - 27, 2014.<br />
<br />
The coin was issued to commemorate 570th Anniversary of discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reverse depicts the square-rigged vessel Sao Lourenco of the Portuguese navigator Joao Goncalvez Zarco in 1419/20, and relief maps of Madeira (below the ship) and of Porto Santo (at top right). The time of this voyage strongly suggests that Zarco's vessel of trade in northern Europe, and is generally described as being a little larger than the barca (bark), which was commonly used in southern Europe. A barinel was perhaps 50 - 60 ft long and 15 - 18 ft in beam. The bonnet of the sail with the words AVE MARIA inscribed on it was a common nautical motif of the time. The reverse legend 1420 MADEIRA - PORTO SANTO 1419 marks the rediscovery of these two islands by Zarco and his companion Tristao Vaz Teixeira. They first discovered Porto Santo. From there they sailed out to the island nearby that could be seen in clear weather. They named it Ilha da Madeira (Island of Timber) as the island was densely covered with trees. The long tongue of land on Madeira they named Sao Lourenco, for Zarco's ship. At the time of discovery, Madeira was uninhabited. Settlers soon followed after the discovery. Their sugar plantations created a demand for slave labor, which served as an incentive to explore the western coast of Africa.</div>

In February 1963, the aviation unit of <span style="text-align: left;">the KCG closed, though it reopened in the 80's. Since 1980 the KCG began expanding its fleet largely, and in August 1991 the Police Unit was renamed the Korea National Maritime Police Agency. In 2007 the Korea National Maritime Police Agency was integrated into the Coast Guard.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Korea Coast Guard is responsible for maritime safety and control off the coast of South Korea. The KCG is an external branch of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at peacetime. Recently, with continuous border crossings by Chinese watercraft, the Korean Coast Guard has deployed a significant number of heavy vessels to the Yellow Sea. The KCG has its headquarters in Songdodong, Incheon, and has hundreds of smaller operating stations along the coastline of the Korean Peninsula.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Korean Coast Guard operates 4 classes of heavy vessels (over 1000 tons), 3 classes of medium vessels (over 250 tons), and 3 classes of light vessels (speedboats over 30 tons). The KCG also uses several types of 'special purpose watercraft', such as firefighting vessels, barges, high speed scout boats, light patrols, and amphibious hovercraft. The KCG aviation unit fields 6 fixed-wing aircraft and 16 rotary-wing aircraft. The Coast Guard also has its own asymmetric warfare unit, the 'Korean Coast Guard Special Operation Unit'.</div>
