This 200 Lire coin was issued to commemorate 100 years of the Military Naval Base at Taranto, Italy. The reverse of the coin shows a steamship in the Taranto's military harbor, one of Italy's most important sea ports. Taranto is a city situated in Southern Italy.
Taranto became famous during World War II, as a consequence of the November 1940 British air attack on the Regia Marina naval base stationed here, which is today called the Battle of Taranto.
